A 74-year-old female patient was diagnosed with a basal cell carcinoma (BCC) located just above her upper lip—an area where precision and cosmetic sensitivity are essential. Given the prominence of this region and the importance of preserving natural skin movement and symmetry, Dr. Lance Henry, Fellowship-trained Mohs Surgeon at Advanced Dermatology & Skin Cancer Center, recommended Mohs micrographic surgery for optimal results.
Mohs surgery is the gold standard for treating facial BCCs, especially around the lips and mouth. It involves the systematic removal and microscopic examination of tissue layers until the cancer is completely cleared. This approach offers the highest cure rate while conserving surrounding healthy skin—critical for maintaining a natural smile and facial harmony.
Dr. Henry successfully removed all cancerous tissue in a single stage. Following the excision, the surgical site was reconstructed with close attention to the natural curves and muscle movement of the upper lip. The “after” photo, taken one month post-op, shows excellent healing with barely visible scarring and intact facial symmetry.
