Patient Story: Large Basal Cell Carcinoma on the Right Cheek Treated with Mohs Surgery
A 76-year-old male patient presented with a large basal cell carcinoma (BCC) on the right inferior central malar cheek—an area that plays a key role in facial symmetry, expression, and overall appearance. Due to the tumor’s size and location, Dr. Lance Henry, double board-certified dermatologist and micrographic surgeon, and the most experienced Fellowship-trained Mohs Surgeon in the region, recommended Mohs micrographic surgery to ensure complete removal and precise reconstruction.
Mohs surgery is ideal for large or complex facial BCCs. It allows for stepwise removal of cancerous tissue, with each layer analyzed under a microscope to ensure clear margins before reconstruction begins. This method preserves as much healthy skin as possible, which is critical in maintaining natural facial contours.
Following cancer removal, Dr. Henry carefully reconstructed the surgical site with both function and facial aesthetics in mind. His attention to skin tension lines and cheek structure helped achieve a well-blended and subtle result. At six weeks post-surgery, the “after” photo reveals excellent healing with smooth skin texture, natural cheek shape, and minimal scarring—even in a previously large defect area.
This case illustrates how Mohs surgery, when performed by an experienced surgeon, can successfully treat extensive facial skin cancer while protecting appearance, expression, and confidence. The patient’s recovery was comfortable and swift, with full return to normal daily life.
