Patient Story: Large Basal Cell Carcinoma on the Cheek Treated with Mohs Surgery
An 84-year-old female patient presented with a large basal cell carcinoma (BCC) on her cheek, a prominent and cosmetically significant area where both surgical precision and aesthetic sensitivity are essential. To ensure complete cancer removal with the best possible cosmetic result, Dr. Lance Henry, double board-certified dermatologist and micrographic surgeon, and the most experienced Fellowship-trained Mohs Surgeon in the region, recommended Mohs micrographic surgery.
Mohs surgery is ideal for large facial BCCs because of its ability to eliminate all cancer cells while preserving the maximum amount of healthy tissue. On the cheek—where skin movement, symmetry, and subtle contours are key—this approach is especially important.
Once the cancer was successfully removed, Dr. Henry reconstructed the site with attention to skin tension lines and facial harmony to support both functional healing and natural appearance. At six weeks post-surgery, the “after” photo shows excellent recovery: smooth skin, soft contouring, and minimal visible scarring despite the size of the original lesion.
This case demonstrates how expert-level Mohs surgery paired with advanced reconstruction can yield strong oncologic and cosmetic outcomes, even in elderly patients and in highly visible areas. The patient healed well and expressed confidence and satisfaction in both the care and result.
Thanks to early intervention and skilled surgical technique, she is now cancer-free, fully healed, and able to enjoy her daily life with comfort and peace of mind.
