Patient Story: Basal Cell Carcinoma on the Forehead Treated with Mohs Surgery
A 73-year-old male patient was diagnosed with a basal cell carcinoma (BCC) on his forehead—a sun-exposed, high-visibility area where both cosmetic outcome and complete removal are important. To ensure the best result, Dr. Lance Henry, double board-certified dermatologist and micrographic surgeon, and the most experienced Fellowship-trained Mohs Surgeon in the region, recommended Mohs micrographic surgery.
Mohs surgery is especially effective for facial skin cancers like those on the forehead. The technique involves removing the cancerous tissue one layer at a time and examining each layer under a microscope to ensure all cancer cells are eliminated. This high level of accuracy allows for the full removal of the tumor with minimal disruption to the surrounding healthy skin.
Following the procedure, Dr. Henry reconstructed the surgical site with great care to maintain natural forehead lines and minimize visible scarring. At six weeks post-surgery, the “after” photo shows excellent healing. The skin is smooth, the contour is preserved, and the area blends seamlessly with the rest of the forehead—an outstanding cosmetic result, especially in an older adult.
This case demonstrates how early intervention, expert technique, and attention to detail can produce both a successful cure and a beautiful result. The patient recovered comfortably and returned to daily life with confidence, knowing the cancer was removed with the highest level of precision and care.
