Patient Story: Basal Cell Carcinoma on the Nostril Treated with Mohs Surgery
An 80-year-old female patient was diagnosed with a basal cell carcinoma (BCC) on the side of her nostril—a highly visible and structurally complex area of the face. Due to the location’s delicate skin and functional role in breathing, Dr. Lance Henry, Fellowship-trained Mohs Surgeon at Advanced Dermatology & Skin Cancer Center, recommended Mohs micrographic surgery to ensure the most effective and tissue-sparing treatment.
Mohs surgery is especially critical in areas like the nose where precision is paramount. The technique allows cancerous tissue to be removed one thin layer at a time, with each layer examined under a microscope until all cancer cells are eliminated. This ensures complete removal while preserving as much surrounding skin as possible—helping maintain the natural contour of the nostril.
Dr. Henry completed the procedure in a single stage, followed by a carefully planned reconstruction to support both appearance and nasal structure. One month post-surgery, the patient’s “after” photo reveals impressive healing: smooth skin, preserved nostril symmetry, and minimal visible scarring.
This case highlights the dual goals of Mohs surgery—complete skin cancer eradication and optimal cosmetic outcome. Particularly in older adults, minimizing trauma to the skin while ensuring long-term cancer control is essential.
