Patient Story: Basal Cell Carcinoma on the Nostril Treated with Mohs Surgery
A 64-year-old male patient was diagnosed with a basal cell carcinoma (BCC) on the nostril—a highly visible and anatomically complex area. Given the location’s functional importance and delicate structure, Dr. Lance Henry, double board-certified dermatologist and micrographic surgeon, and the most experienced Fellowship-trained Mohs Surgeon in the region, recommended Mohs micrographic surgery for the most effective and precise treatment.
Mohs surgery is the preferred method for treating skin cancers on the nose due to its ability to remove cancerous tissue layer by layer, with each section examined under a microscope to ensure complete clearance. This method achieves the highest cure rate while preserving the surrounding healthy tissue—critical for maintaining nostril shape, airflow, and facial balance.
Once the cancer was successfully removed, Dr. Henry carefully reconstructed the area to support natural healing and maintain the nasal contour. At six weeks post-op, the “after” photo shows excellent results: smooth skin, restored nostril symmetry, and minimal visible evidence of surgery.
This case demonstrates how Mohs surgery, combined with expert reconstruction, can resolve skin cancer in even the most challenging locations without sacrificing form or function. The patient’s recovery was smooth, and he returned to normal life confident in both his health and his appearance.
