A 67-year-old female patient was diagnosed with a basal cell carcinoma (BCC) on her scalp—a location where skin is often sun-exposed and tumors may grow unnoticed until they become sizable. Given the need for complete removal while protecting the surrounding tissue and hair-bearing areas, Dr. Lance Henry, double board-certified dermatologist and micrographic surgeon, and the most experienced Fellowship-trained Mohs Surgeon in the region, recommended Mohs micrographic surgery.
Mohs surgery is ideal for scalp skin cancers due to its precision and high cure rate. During the procedure, thin layers of tissue are removed and examined under a microscope until all cancer cells are eliminated. This method ensures thorough removal while preserving as much healthy skin as possible—especially important for reconstruction and hair regrowth on the scalp.
Once the tumor was removed, Dr. Henry reconstructed the site with close attention to skin tension and blood flow to promote optimal healing and reduce the chance of complications. At six weeks post-surgery, the “after” photo shows a well-healed area with smooth skin, clean closure, and healthy tissue. The site is secure, with excellent potential for continued blending with the surrounding scalp.
