Patient Story: Basal Cell Carcinoma Above the Lip Treated with Mohs Surgery
A 46-year-old male patient was diagnosed with a basal cell carcinoma (BCC) located just above his upper lip—an area where skin movement, contour, and aesthetics are especially important. Given the facial location and the patient's young age, Dr. Lance Henry, double board-certified dermatologist and micrographic surgeon, and the most experienced Fellowship-trained Mohs Surgeon in the region, recommended Mohs micrographic surgery to ensure precise removal and optimal cosmetic results.
Mohs surgery is the gold standard for treating facial BCCs. Its layer-by-layer tissue removal process allows for immediate microscopic examination of each section to confirm complete cancer clearance while preserving as much healthy skin as possible. This level of precision is especially valuable in areas where subtle facial expressions and symmetry matter.
After the cancer was removed, Dr. Henry performed a meticulous reconstruction of the area, focusing on preserving the natural curvature and function of the upper lip and philtrum. At six weeks post-op, the “after” photo shows exceptional healing with minimal scarring, intact lip movement, and natural skin texture.
This case highlights the benefits of early detection and expert surgical care, particularly for younger patients with facial skin cancers. Thanks to the precision of Mohs surgery and Dr. Henry’s extensive reconstructive experience, this patient achieved both a complete cure and a confident return to his normal lifestyle—with virtually no cosmetic compromise.
