Patient Story: Basal Cell Carcinoma on the Cheek Below the Eye Treated with Mohs Surgery
A 74-year-old female patient was diagnosed with a basal cell carcinoma (BCC) on the cheek just below her eye—an area where the skin is thin, sensitive, and plays a key role in facial expression and symmetry. Given the proximity to the lower eyelid and the importance of preserving both function and appearance, Dr. Lance Henry, double board-certified dermatologist and micrographic surgeon, and the most experienced Fellowship-trained Mohs Surgeon in the region, recommended Mohs micrographic surgery for precise removal and optimal aesthetic outcome.
Mohs surgery offers the highest cure rate for non-melanoma skin cancers and is especially effective in high-risk facial areas. The technique removes the cancer layer by layer, with each section examined under a microscope until the area is completely clear. This approach maximizes tissue preservation while ensuring complete cancer excision—especially vital near the eye.
After successful removal of the BCC, Dr. Henry reconstructed the surgical site with great care to support proper healing and maintain the natural contour of the lower eyelid and upper cheek. At six weeks post-operation, the “after” photo reveals outstanding healing: smooth skin, well-blended tone, and no visible disruption to the delicate eye area.
This case is a strong example of how expert-level Mohs surgery can provide both clinical and cosmetic success. The patient experienced a comfortable recovery and now enjoys peace of mind, knowing the cancer was fully removed and her appearance preserved.
