Patient Story: Basal Cell Carcinoma on the Lip Treated with Mohs Surgery
A 76-year-old male patient presented with a basal cell carcinoma (BCC) located on the lower lip—one of the most delicate and functionally important areas of the face. Because the lip is vital for speaking, eating, and facial expression, Dr. Lance Henry, Fellowship-trained Mohs Surgeon at Advanced Dermatology & Skin Cancer Center, recommended Mohs surgery for the most precise and conservative treatment option.
Mohs micrographic surgery is uniquely suited for areas like the lip. It allows the surgeon to remove cancerous tissue layer by layer, examining each under a microscope until clear margins are confirmed—all while sparing as much healthy tissue as possible. This level of precision is crucial in preserving both the form and function of the lips.
The surgery was completed in a single stage, and Dr. Henry reconstructed the site with meticulous technique to support natural lip movement and appearance. One month after the procedure, the “after” photo shows excellent healing, with barely noticeable scarring and full restoration of lip contour.
This case is a clear example of why Mohs surgery is considered the gold standard for treating facial skin cancers. It offers the highest cure rate while delivering optimal cosmetic and functional outcomes—even in challenging locations like the lips.
Thanks to early detection and expert care, this patient now enjoys peace of mind knowing the cancer was fully removed and his daily comfort and appearance remain intact.
