Patient Story: Basal Cell Carcinoma on the Nostril Treated with Mohs Surgery
A 67-year-old female patient was diagnosed with a basal cell carcinoma (BCC) on her nostril—an area that requires extreme precision due to its delicate cartilage, thin skin, and central role in breathing and appearance. For this case, Dr. Lance Henry, double board-certified dermatologist and micrographic surgeon, and the most experienced Fellowship-trained Mohs Surgeon in the region, recommended Mohs micrographic surgery to achieve the most thorough and cosmetically favorable outcome.
Mohs surgery is ideal for nasal BCCs because of its ability to remove cancer layer by layer, ensuring complete excision while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. This approach is critical for maintaining the structural integrity of the nostril and surrounding facial features.
After the tumor was successfully removed, Dr. Henry performed a careful reconstruction to preserve nostril function and restore a natural, symmetrical appearance. At six weeks post-surgery, the “after” photo shows remarkable healing—smooth skin, natural nasal contour, and minimal visible scarring.
This case highlights the power of Mohs surgery when combined with expert surgical reconstruction, especially in high-precision areas like the nose. The patient recovered comfortably and returned to daily life with peace of mind, knowing the cancer had been fully removed and her appearance preserved.
Thanks to early detection and the highest level of dermatologic surgical expertise, she is now cancer-free and healing beautifully.
