At Advanced Dermatology & Revive Medical Spa, we treat each patient with the utmost care. Each case is examined and diagnosed carefully and treatment options are weighed based on many factors. A shave biopsy is performed on any irregular growth to determine whether or not it is malignant. If it is cancer, the appropriate treatment option is selected based on the location and type of cancer.
Types of Skin Cancer
Basal Cell Carcinoma
Characterized by raised, smooth, pearly bumps around the head, neck, or shoulder areas. It often resembles a sore, but fails to heal.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Characterized by red, scaling, thickening patches of skin in sun-exposed areas.
Melanoma appears as dark, either brown or black, lesions. Be observant of any moles changing size, shape, elevation, or color.
Skin Cancer Treatments
In excisional surgery, physicians cut out (excise) the cancerous tissue and a surrounding margin of healthy skin.
Photodynamic therapy or (PDT) destroys skin cancer cells with a combination of laser light and drugs that make cancer cells sensitive to light.
Topical chemotherapy usually comes in the form of a cream or lotion that is placed directly on the skin one or two times a day for several weeks.
Cryosurgery involves the application of liquid nitrogen directly to the skin via an aerosol spray to freeze and destroy the cancerous or pre-cancerous cells.
Occasionally there are some laser treatments that can be used to treat certain types of skin cancer in lieu of cryosurgery.
Mohs Skin Cancer Surgery
In Mohs surgery, physicians remove the lesion layer by layer. This accurate, micrographically controlled procedure is meant to completely remove the cancerous tissue without harming the surrounding tissue. Mohs surgery is the most precise and effective method for removing problem areas and is especially effective for removing tissue on sensitive areas, like the face, with little chance of regrowth and disfigurement.
The Advanced Dermatology team’s goal is to improve the rate of cure of most types of skin cancer by focusing on prevention and early diagnosis and treatment. With that in mind, optional skin cancer screenings are available.
