Dry skin? Order a Moisture Sandwich.

Nothing like a wonderful moisture sandwich. Of course, you don’t eat it, but having properly moisturized, healthy skin, even in the winter, can very well be wonderful. Order up!

Some general dry skin tips during the winter, including how to make a moisture sandwich:

  1. SUNSCREEN – You still need to wear your sunscreen daily! While UVB (burning) rays are the strongest during summer, you can still burn and damage your skin during the winter! The sun’s damaging rays also bounce off of snow and sand so use your sun protection smarts when encountering these elements. I recommend SPF 30, Broad-Spectrum. Limiting your time in the sun when it is the strongest 10am 2pm, seeking shade, wearing protective clothing, a wide brim hat, and sunglasses are also recommended.
  2. MOISTURE SANDWICH – For my acne patients – Your retinoids may cause more irritation during the colder, dryer winter months. To help combat flaking, apply lotion to a clean dry face, and then apply your prescription retinoid as you normally would. For extra moisture follow, the retinoid with another layer of moisturizer (a moisturizer sandwich).
  3. VASELINE – To combat dry skin in general – keep plain unscented Vaseline/petroleum jelly on hand and apply to damp skin, after washing hands or bathing, and to lips throughout the day. This can also be used on dry cuticles for a moisture boost before bed. For an extra treat, apply and then cover with some cotton gloves. You can order these from Amazon.
  4. HUMIDIFIER – During the winter, running the heat can be very drying to the skin. I suggest a humidifier. Running a humidifier pulls moisture back into the air to improve dry, itchy skin and help it retain that hydration. Cracked lips, limp hair, itchy skin, and bad allergies are all conditions that can improve with the use of a humidifier.
