Patient Story: Basal Cell Carcinoma Above the Lip Treated with Mohs Surgery
An 85-year-old male patient presented with a basal cell carcinoma (BCC) located just above his upper lip—an area that demands extreme surgical precision due to its visibility and role in facial movement. To ensure full cancer removal while preserving function and cosmetic appearance, Dr. Lance Henry, Fellowship-trained Mohs Surgeon at Advanced Dermatology & Skin Cancer Center, recommended Mohs micrographic surgery.
Mohs surgery is ideal for treating skin cancers in delicate facial areas like the lip. Its layer-by-layer technique allows for complete cancer removal while conserving healthy tissue—critical for minimizing disruption to surrounding skin and maintaining natural expression.
Following surgery, the site was meticulously reconstructed to support proper lip movement and retain the natural curvature of the skin above the mouth. At six weeks post-op, the “after” photo shows exceptional healing. The area is smooth and blends well with surrounding skin, with very little visible scarring.
