Patient Story: Large Basal Cell Carcinoma on the Forehead Treated with Mohs Surgery
A 71-year-old female patient was diagnosed with a large basal cell carcinoma (BCC) on her forehead, a prominent and highly visible area of the face. Due to the size and location of the lesion, Dr. Lance Henry, double board-certified dermatologist and micrographic surgeon, and the most experienced Fellowship-trained Mohs Surgeon in the region, recommended Mohs micrographic surgery to ensure complete removal while preserving cosmetic integrity.
Mohs surgery offers the highest level of precision in skin cancer treatment, particularly for large or facial tumors. Its stepwise approach allows for the removal of all cancerous tissue while minimizing damage to the surrounding healthy skin—a critical factor in facial areas like the forehead where appearance and symmetry matter greatly.
After the cancer was removed, Dr. Henry carefully reconstructed the area to restore the natural contour of the patient’s forehead. At six weeks post-surgery, the “after” photo shows excellent healing with a smooth, well-blended surface and minimal visible scarring, even given the original size of the lesion.
This case demonstrates how Mohs surgery, in expert hands, can provide outstanding outcomes for patients with larger or more advanced BCCs. The patient recovered comfortably and was able to return to her routine with both her health and appearance restored.
