Patient Story: Basal Cell Carcinoma on the Nose Treated with Mohs Surgery and Nostril Reconstruction
A 79-year-old male patient was diagnosed with a basal cell carcinoma (BCC) on the nose, involving the lower nasal structure near the nostril rim. Due to the tumor’s size and location, which posed both cosmetic and functional concerns, Dr. Lance Henry, double board-certified dermatologist and micrographic surgeon, and the most experienced Fellowship-trained Mohs Surgeon in the region, recommended Mohs micrographic surgery followed by tailored nostril reconstruction.
Mohs surgery is the gold standard for treating skin cancers on the face—especially the nose—because it ensures complete removal of cancerous cells while sparing healthy tissue. In this case, the BCC was located in a functionally critical area. Removal of the tumor risked altering the natural shape of the nostril and compromising airflow if not reconstructed properly.
After successfully clearing the cancer with Mohs surgery, Dr. Henry performed a detailed reconstruction to restore the nostril’s natural curve and maintain symmetry, breathing function, and facial balance. The repair was carefully aligned with the surrounding nasal tissue to promote seamless healing and long-term durability.
At six weeks post-op, the “after” photo reveals excellent healing with restored nostril structure, smooth skin, and minimal visible scarring—an outstanding result given the complexity of the area.
