Mohs Micrographic Surgery is a highly specialized technique used to treat many basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers. Unlike traditional excision, Mohs surgery removes cancer one thin layer at a time, allowing the surgeon to examine each layer under a microscope during the procedure.
By evaluating the tissue immediately, Dr. Henry can determine whether cancer cells remain and remove only the areas where cancer is still present. This process continues until all cancer has been completely removed.
Because only tissue containing cancer is removed, Mohs surgery preserves as much healthy skin as possible while providing the highest cure rates for many skin cancers. Your visit begins with Dr. Henry examining the biopsy site, reviewing your diagnosis, and confirming the treatment plan. Once the surgical area is identified, local anesthetic is used to completely numb the area, allowing you to remain awake and comfortable throughout the procedure.
Dr. Henry carefully removes the visible skin cancer along with a thin layer of surrounding tissue. Every effort is made to preserve as much healthy skin as possible while ensuring the tissue needed for microscopic evaluation is obtained.
The removed tissue is carefully mapped and oriented so Dr. Henry knows exactly where every section originated. It is then processed in our on-site laboratory, where specially prepared slides are created for microscopic examination.
Dr. Henry personally examines 100% of the tissue margins under the microscope, looking for any remaining cancer cells. Unlike standard excisions that evaluate only selected portions of the margins, Mohs surgery allows every edge of the removed tissue to be examined.
If cancer cells remain, Dr. Henry uses the surgical map to identify their exact location and removes another thin layer of tissue only from that specific area. Healthy tissue that has already been confirmed to be cancer-free is left undisturbed.
This process of removal and microscopic examination is repeated until no cancer cells remain.
Once the cancer has been completely removed, Dr. Henry discusses the best options for repairing the surgical site. Many repairs are completed the same day using techniques designed to preserve both function and appearance.
